I've been teaching 3 classes of 8-11 year olds since November now, they're in a small school and have small classes. Eight of them in CM2 getting ready to go off to college, and eight in CM1 who've all probably been at school together for the last 7 years in their little cocoon. I feel scared for those going off to college (which in France is secondary school/high school), they're going to get a big shock going from being the big kids in a small school to the little kids in a big school. They seem so innocent, which I've always loved, these kids don't go on facebook, they don't have phones attached them at all times and they're nice and polite to grown ups! They love playing sports, and they like video games and drawing and reading. They're kind to each other and to all the younger children in their school. They even take it in turns to go into maternelle (2-5yr olds) to read them a story every day.
I don't know what changed, maybe the weather warming up, maybe the holiday atmosphere with all the bank holidays we've had this month. But all of a sudden I've heard them whispering about who likes who, and writing NAME + NAME = LOVE!!! Can't reveal any names of course!
Suddenly they can't concentrate on class anymore, suddenly the pairs I put them in are not the right ones, I happened to pick a boy and girl at random to work together, with the blushes and the teasing that followed I realised I'd made the wrong choice!!
I was dying to ask for the gossip and know who likes who and if anyone had kissed yet, I remember exactly what we were up to at our school at their age! They seem much more innocent!
But then I remembered I'm the teacher and I did my best to ignore it, but to avoid the poor kids blushing I kindly changed the pairs around!!!
