Tooth fairy or the little mouse?

Well I really can't believe that one week before her fifth birthday Laila has her first wobbly tooth!
How did that time go so fast?
She is very excited and I remember LOVING it when I had a wobbly tooth. Playing with it for hours on end with my tongue! Then when it falls out sticking your tongue in the gap that's left. Wrapping it up carefully in a  tissue, putting it under your pillow for the tooth fairy and wondering what coin you'd find under the pillow in the morning...

But wait, we're in France, there's no tooth fairy! Oh no! So who comes for all the little French children's teeth? It's a little mouse "la petite souris", not quite as magical as the tooth fairy but still exciting enough for the little ones!

Laila is perfectly aware of both cultures here, Peppa Pig, The Little Princess and Lola all have visits from the tooth fairy. All her friends at school talk about la petite souris. So I think the sensible thing will be to have the little mouse come for Laila's tooth when the night comes to put it under her pillow. We are in France after all, and her friends won't believe her if she says a fairy came!

Part of me is sad that the fairy won't be visiting us, and part of me is sad at how grown up my girl is becoming!

Read here about the origins of the tooth fairy and la petite souris in French, and in English.

Gosh they grow so fast! So how much does a little mouse leave these days?

I don't know, I need to start asking around! I'm hoping a euro will be sufficient!

It's a little mouse out here too, his name is Perez.

Richard, is he called Perez all over Spain or just in your house? Actually you might not have reached that stage yet?

No, we've not reached that stage yet, but that's his name for all of Spain (and a lot of other Spanish-speaking countries) - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ratoncito_P%C3%A9rez

We stuck with the tooth fairy for Rors but sadly the tooth fairy that comes to our house proved to be very forgetful so he quickly rumbled it was us behind the scheme! The little mouse sounds like a lovely idea. Much more believable since we often have mice in our bedrooms ...
We give a euro per tooth.

Hi Steph. I think a euro sounds reasonable, lets hope Laila thinks so too! Laila will not allow us to forget I think!

This tactic may come in handy at some stage...
